“Do you think French fries, coffee and eggs are harmful?” You could be wrong

Eggs, potatoes and coffee are kitchen staples, but they've gotten a worse reputation than most. However, nutritionists say it doesn't deserve that reputation, with a growing number of nutritionists, doctors and nutrition professors recommending it.

Nine health experts were asked which foods are considered harmful, and here are some of the items they mentioned and the benefits people might miss out on if they cut them out completely.

Eggs are rich in protein

Eggs have been portrayed as a bad food because they are high in dietary cholesterol, which health experts previously believed could contribute to heart disease, said Dr. Maya Vadivelo, assistant professor of nutrition at the University of Rhode Island.

But modern science has disproved this idea, showing that dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol affect heart health differently.

Eating foods high in saturated fat, such as red meat, fried foods, and full-fat dairy products, increases the type of cholesterol in the blood that increases the risk of heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But consuming cholesterol-rich foods like eggs and shellfish has little to do with high blood cholesterol or heart disease risk.

Despite this change, many people still look down on white people. That's likely due to other breakfast foods that are often paired, Vadivelo said.

The American Heart Association says people can enjoy an egg or two each day as a high-quality protein source. Each egg contains about 6 grams.

Do not fry the potatoes

It's no secret that the way you cook and the season affect how healthy a meal is. Potatoes have been demonized because of their unhealthy preparation, said Carolyn Suozzi, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

“Potatoes are great,” says Susie. “What happens is, unfortunately, we tend to spoil the skin by not eating it, frying it or mixing it with anything like sour cream, butter and bacon,” he added.

This layer adds saturated fat, which should be limited to 13 grams or less per day, according to the American Heart Association.

A 2021 study found that consuming large amounts of French fries was associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Potato skins are high in fiber which aids in digestion. Susie also said that potatoes contain vitamin C and potassium. She advised roasting, baking, mashing or boiling potatoes and seasoning them with olive oil, salt, pepper and herbs.

That doesn't mean frozen foods are healthy

Seven nutrition experts lament the widespread perception that frozen fruits and vegetables are less healthy than their fresh counterparts.

Vadivelu noted, “Frozen vegetables and foods are packed with high nutrient density and then freeze quickly. “So, in many cases, they retain more nutrient content than their fresh counterparts, especially when you live in a place with greater seasonal variation and availability.”

In this context, Suzy felt that in addition to retaining nutrients, frozen vegetables are sometimes cheaper than fresh and help people prevent food waste.

A few cups of coffee is nothing to worry about

The health value of coffee — like potatoes — depends on what's added, said Alicia Henson, an education expert in the master's program in nutritional science and dietetics at the University of California, Berkeley.

“If you go to Starbucks and drink a frappuccino or coffee with a lot of added sugar and cream, that's not necessarily a healthy addition,” Henson added.

The type of carbohydrate makes a difference

Experts said Carbohydrates It is often considered unhealthy due to the popularity of low-carb and keto diets. But it is wrong to think that all carbohydrates are the same.

Refined grains, used to make processed foods like white bread, crackers and pastries, lack the fiber and nutrients that make whole grains healthy, Shiu said. It includes iron and B vitamins. But quinoa and brown rice, for example, provide protein, magnesium, iron and fiber, which keep you feeling full.

A nutritionist in private practice in Los Angeles, Dr. Melina Zambolis often recommends that patients eat a specific whole grain as a snack, and they'll be surprised: popcorn.

Many people associate popcorn with the cinema version, filled with salt, butter and sometimes sugar – and often sold with a large soft drink. But when you make popcorn at home with just olive oil and spices, the snack contains fiber and can be part of a balanced diet, Zambolis says. Research also shows that popcorn contains phenolic acids, a type of antioxidant.

Zambolis added that people should not focus on avoiding any food. Instead, it's best to follow a healthy diet that prioritizes whole foods over highly processed foods with added sugar.

“That's what real professionals do,” he said. “We don't necessarily look at individual foods in isolation.”
