An important discovery that could prevent the spread of cancer and end the agony of chemotherapy

Researchers at the University of South Australia have developed a new way to treat liver cancer, using 3D-printed cassettes to deliver chemotherapy drugs directly to the tumor site.

The technique aims to reduce the recurrence of the cancer while reducing the harmful side effects commonly associated with chemotherapy.

“3D tapes,” loaded with doses of the anticancer agents 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and cisplatin (Cis), are placed at the site of the surgically removed cancer tumor. The technology targets remaining cancer cells and limits their spread throughout the body, thereby reducing unwanted side effects.

The technology was initially designed strictly as an adjuvant treatment for liver cancer, but the researchers say it has the potential to treat ovarian cancer, head and neck cancer, and many other types of cancer where 5FU and Cis have already proven successful.

Dr Soha Yusuf, a researcher at the University of South Australia, says this new technology has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of liver cancer.

He adds: “The main treatment protocol for liver cancer is to surgically remove the tumor with chemotherapy, although this is important to prevent recurrence, there are amazing statistics showing the number of patients who choose to stop treatment because of its aggressiveness and how it affects their quality of life.”

“Therefore, we developed a chemotherapy-loaded cassette that releases 5FU and Cis directly into the surgical cavity,” he explains.

Lead researcher Professor Sanjay Garg of the University of South Australia said a personalized approach to cancer treatment was essential to improve patient outcomes.

He explains: “Importantly, the biodegradability of the tapes adds the significant advantage of eliminating the need for surgical removal after treatment, making them a more patient-friendly option for treating liver cancer.”
