Scientists have revealed a significant increase in deaths from cardiovascular disease after the coronavirus pandemic, prompting concern and a desire to find the cause, the New York Post reported.
“We were concerned about the emerging evidence of worsening chronic disease outcomes during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said CDC's Rebecca C. Woodruff. It was fine before the pandemic,” Russia Today reported.
A joint report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Northwestern University reveals that between 2020 and 2022, deaths from cardiovascular disease will exceed expectations by 228,000 across all population groups.
This two-year period saw a significant increase of 9.3%, which contrasts sharply with the 8.9% decline recorded from 2010 to 2019.
Woodruff attributes the backlash to the widespread effects of “Covid-19,” noting its role in hindering access to health care and delaying treatment for chronic or acute heart problems. The pandemic has also presented challenges to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, affecting factors such as diet, sleep, physical activity, blood pressure and blood sugar management.
Even worse, new evidence suggests a possible link between Covid-19 infection and an increased risk of heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Woodruff emphasizes the importance of research to understand the drivers behind the significant increase in cardiovascular disease mortality rates, with the aim of guiding clinical and public health strategies to prevent, diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease.
“Re-prioritizing cardiovascular disease prevention and management is an essential first step,” Woodruff concluded, highlighting the urgent need to prioritize cardiovascular health in public health efforts and clinical practice.
